چکیده

A sensory substitution technique is presented in which the kinesthetic and tactile feedback are substituted by tactile feedback only provided by two wearable devices able to apply forces to the index finger and thumb holding a handle during a needle insertion task. The force pattern fed back to the user while using the tactile device is similar, in terms of intensity and area of application, to that perceived while interacting with a haptic device providing both tactile and kinesthetic feedback and it can be thought as a subtraction between the complete haptic and kinesthetic feedback. For this reason we refer to this approach as sensory subtraction instead of sensory substitution. A needle insertion scenario is considered. The haptic device is connected to a virtual environment simulating a needle insertion task. Experiments show that the perception of inserting a needle using the tactile feedback only is nearly indistinguishable from the one felt by the user using both tactile and kinesthetic feedback. As most of the sensory substitution approaches, also this does not suffer from typical stability issues of teleoperation systems due for instance to delays. Moreover experiments show that the proposed sensory substitution technique outperforms sensory substitution with more conventional visual feedback.

Sensory subtraction with cutaneous feedback to ensure safety in bimanual robot-assisted surgery

In this paper we present a novel approach to force feedback in robot-assisted surgery. Haptic stimuli, consisting of both kinesthetic and cutaneous components, are substituted with cutaneous feedback only. This new approach to sensory substitution in haptics is called sensory subtraction, since it can be thought as the subtraction between the complete haptic interaction and its kinesthetic comp...

Interactions between tactile and proprioceptive representations in haptics.

Neuroprosthetic limbs, regardless of their sophisticated motor control, require sensory feedback to viably interact with the environment. Toward that aim, the authors examined interrelationships between tactile and proprioceptive sensations. Through human psychophysics experiments, they evaluated error patterns of subjects estimating hand location in a horizontal 2-dimensional workspace under 3...

Cutaneous Feedback of Planar Fingertip Deformation and Vibration on a da Vinci Surgical Robot

I. INTRODUCTION Telerobotic surgical systems involve a slave robot, which interacts with the patient, and a master console, operated by the human surgeon. The slave robot reproduces the hand movements of the surgeon, who in turn needs to observe the operative environment with which the robot is interacting. The latter can be achieved by a combination of visual and haptic cues that flow from the...

Sensory subtraction via cutaneous feedback: a novel technique to improve the transparency of robotic surgery

In this paper we present a novel technique to force feedback in robot-assisted surgery. It consists of substituting haptic force, composed by kinesthetic and cutaneous components, with cutaneous stimuli only. The force generated can be thus thought as a subtraction between the complete haptic interaction, cutaneous and kinesthetic, and the kinesthetic part of it. For this reason, we refer to th...

Effects of Vestibular and Tactile Stimulation on Behavioral Disorders due to Sensory Processing Deficiency in 3-13 Years Old Iranian Autistic Children

Objectives: Among the most important problems of autistic children are the behavioral disorders due to sensory processing deficiency, which are typically reflected in behaviors such as impulsivity, attention and concentration disorders, undesirable emotional reactions, sensory seeking in the form of stereotype behaviors, self-injury and self-stimulating. The present study aimed at exploring the...
